The Return of She. The Abbot tries to dissuade them from going on and warns them that, however beautiful, nothing is immortal, even if the Queen was born centuries ago in Ancient Egypt or remembers it from a past life.

He warns them not to seek Ayesha out, but instead to seek true enlightenment and release from the cycle of life and death, but Leo is obsessed with finding her again. It was an interesting spiritual tangent in an otherwise kind of depressing novel. After their marriage, they will return to Kor in Africa, an ancient magical city where the Pillar of Life, a spiritual fire that gives immortality, will make Leo immortal so that he and Ayesha can live together forever.

The sequel to She, this is quite a long read and i was expecting a lot of messing about before getting to the main plot this wasn’t the case however, it jumped quite quickly into the action and there really isn’t any wasted pages.

Meanwhile, Leo and Ayesha live for now in the mountain temple near Kaloon, and this time is cute and blissful, like a honeymoon period, except that Professor Holly third wheels on the side. Clearly he was much moved.

Too much retelling bores those who have read the earlier work. I think Haggard struck a good balance but any retelling is going to slow the action down some. At the same time the book tells every detail as hsggard it can be, there is no pretense or influence of any religion though it talks about several of them.

Both the back story the history of Ayesha, Kallikrates and Amenartas and the current h.riddr are pretty cool to read, combining strange savages with lost civilizations and treasures. I shrink from attempting too long a book, though my notes and memory would furnish me with sufficient material for volumes.


The flesh dies, or at least it changes, and its passions pass, but that other passion of the spirit — that longing for oneness — is undying as itself. She had sold an estimated 87 million copies, in 44 different languages, and never being out of print, when Ursula Andress starred in a film adaptation, loosely based on the books.

Chapter 1 The Double Sign. What crime have I committed that this sore punishment should be laid upon me? Bored with his confinement, Leo goes hunting in the mountains but Ayesha, fearful for his safety, uses her psychic powers to watch him and sees that he and his men have been attacked by a leopard, and that Leo has been injured.

Were it not so, he, in his own way a very religious man, one who held, as I knew, strict opinions on such matters, would never have purposed to commit the wickedness of suicide. However she refuses Leo’s entreaties to marry him right away, saying that they must shs for the change of seasons and the weather to clear, before they can travel.

In Leo she found her teh, that re-born Kallikrates, the Grecian priest of Isis whom some two thousand years before she had slain in her jealous rage, thus executing on him the judgment of the angry goddess. Ayesha vows that if Leo still loves her, they will return to her ancient home in Africa.
