If you’re a new guy to the C programming language, look for a more modern reference that will focus on standard library usage, compilers, modern idioms, etc. Quotes from The C Programming C h This is a great book, definitely worth reading. The book is easy to read, the example programs actually work, and when I first bought a copy of this book twenty-five years ago, I was able to write a C program to search a very large database and present a nicely structured screen display. There is rarely a sentence one has to read twice, all explanations are exactly at the right level of detail, and the code examples kerhighan perfectly trimmed for the current topic.

Don’t read this book to learn C — that a skill fewer and fewer people need to master. Although the first edition was written init continues to be a worldwide best-seller.

You can start with this book from absolutely nowhere in C programming, in fact, I think it’s better if you do as I felt like I had to “un-learn” many bad habits. He will be missed. The book was also structured to re-use the functions built from previous chapters like getline, atof, strcmp, alloc, etc. He continued, “You can learn the C language without getting Kernighan and Ritchie, but that’s doing it the hard way. Picking up the syntax wasn’t too difficult and I have a fairly good handle on more advanced concepts like pointers already, but this book is absolutely packed with exercises and many of them are quite challenging!
