This book was repulsive. It made me feel sympathetic and compounv me get involved at many points throughout the book. They have been down there for 6 years, but then things don’t add up.

Nov 09, Michael Taylor rated it liked it. But I could only muster up 4 stars. Eli does, but manages compoknd figure out the code with the help of his sisters. Compoknd won’t let them. There were many parts of the story that was interesting and got me thinking about “what would I do” in that situation – but I was so distracted by the “out of character” conpound of the different family members that I had a hard time losing myself in the story and suspending my disbelief.

I would save this crazy story for a more mature reader, although the reading level is quite accessible.

When they entered the compound, believing there was a nuclear war, Eli was separated from his twin brother. The characters are all a little flat. It could have been an interesting enough plot, but it’s horribly predictable. I first picked the book up because it was recommended to me. A tour that leads absolutely nowhere and serves almost zero purpose in the plot. There’s a problem loading this menu right now.

Eli is also said to be fifteen, though I felt he was presented as a much older character and would have honestly prefered that he was older regarding the decisions he makes.


The book opens with 15 year old Eli reflecting back on how they got there, and remembering his twin brother, who didn’t make it in before the door was sealed. Learn more about Amazon Prime. With nine years to go before the air outside will be safe to breathe again, the food supply shows signs of running out, but Eli’s father has a solution—provided they jettison all morals and ethics. From there she went on to be a Peace Corps volunteer in East Africa, and has lived in seven states, as well as a remote Pacific island.

I’m annoyed also about the sideplot compoknd the babies who were supposedly going to be eaten if the food ran out though I thought referring to them as “The Supplementals” was an awesome chilling touch. I loved how many major plot twist there are in this book, but I don’t like how they keep you waiting so long.

Yet Eli is desperately unhappy, as his twin brother Eddy and his grandmother aren’t there with him, as they were vodeen outside the compound when his family fled. Bodeen described scenes so well. It was an effective ending.
