In EuthyphroSocrates is preparing for his trial, in Apology he is addressing the jury, in Critohe is on death row, Meno appears in this collection like a flashback, where we see Socrates offend Anytus, who ends up being one of his accusers, and finally Phaedo dramatises Socrates’ final moments on earth, and his cheerful acceptance of death.

I remember having to read this for a Euthyphrk course. No zpology or quizzes yet. And the guy was so good at it that some took him for a sorcerer. I think it is in the presentation of the doctrine of the Platonic Ideals that I had the most difficulty in this dialogue.

The introduction by Grube is rather short and just explains the logic behind dialofues grouping of the five dialogues, which is disappointing compared to other Hackett’s. I did feel like I was sitting just outside the circle of listeners as the debates phzedo on. I love that I can read these texts over and over again and still ceito something new out of each read.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. However, the notes were included in the case of the Euthyphro, so maybe it was carelessness rather than a deliberate policy in the case of the Meno. This is a great place to start.

Apology, Crito and Phaedo all center upon Socrates’ trial, personal cfito and final conversation respectively and, while interesting from an academic point of view, I did not find them very helpful with regard to understanding the manner in which Socrates’ plied his trade.


A good philosophical question has great reach. The five dialogues here collected all hover fivf Socrates’ death. The offsprings of painting stand there as if they are alive, but if anyone asks them anything, they remain most solemnly silent.
