Ilse Lehiste finished high school in Tallinn and studied piano playing at the Conservatory. Foe convenience, a chart immediately following the introductory chapter illustrates the scheme of presentation followed throughout the book. Suprasegmental features are either listed as the set of features consisting of pitch, stress, and quantity or defined as features whose domain extends over more than one segment.
The book contains a great deal of painstakingly gathered evidence for the existence of speech patterns whose domain is larger than a segment and which, the author states, should form a part of linguistic theory.

Want to Read saving…. I have no idea why this book hasn’t seen any new editions or at least reprints sincesince it’s a veritable gold mine of knowledge on quantity and pitch as tools for lehlste phenomena in languages.
